Mama’s Homemade Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

Mama's Homemade Macaroni and Cheese

Mama’s Homemade Macaroni and Cheese. . .”Comfort Food” at it’s finest!

Mama’s Homemade Macaroni and Cheese. . . there’s none better! It is the epitome of southern comfort food! Mama told me that when we were little, she made this recipe all the time. Funny, I barely remember it, because when Kraft came out with their box version, she began to make for the grandchildren. But I can tell you without reservation, her recipe is FAR superior to any boxed macaroni and cheese!

One night, I made Mama’s Macaroni and Cheese when my daughter, Candace, and her family ate dinner with us. Candace loved it, and remarked, “I can’t believe I have looked for two years trying to find a macaroni and cheese recipe I liked. Who would have thought it was right under my nose?!” And it was . . . because the recipe for Mama’s Macaroni and Cheese is in my first family heritage cookbook, “To Grandmama’s House We Go: A Celebration of Family”, which Candace had!

We think Mama’s macaroni and cheese is the best anywhere! If you try it, I’m sure you will agree:)

Making Mama’s homemade “mac and cheese”. . .

Mama’s Homemade Macaroni and Cheese is easy to prepare, but there are a few separate steps before you actually put the dish together.

  • Boiling the macaroni
  • Making the cheese sauce
  • Putting the casserole together

I boiled my macaroni first, then made the cheese sauce while the macaroni was cooling. Candace suggested making the cheese sauce while the noodles were boiling. Either way will work:)

Once the cheese sauce is made and mixed with the macaroni, then the cracker/cheese topping is added. Sprinkle with parsley and bake! In about 30 minutes you have a delicious homemade macaroni and cheese that will make you never want to eat the store-bought boxes again!

In a time where so many comfort foods are “pre-packaged”, it is so nice to have the “real thing” from time to time. There’s no comparison.
Course: Side Dish
Cuisine: American
Servings: 8
Author: Maribeth
  • 3 cups macaroni, cooked and drained
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 cups milk
  • 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups buttery cracker crumbs, crumbled (I used Ritz)
  • Additional shredded cheddar cheese for the top
  • Dried Parsley Flakes for garnish
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter on low heat. Make a roux by adding flour, and salt—cooking and stirring about 5 minutes.

  3. Add milk, and the 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese. Stir until thickened.

  4. Place macaroni in buttered a 2-quart baking dish—in alternate layers with sauce. (I mixed my macaroni with the cheese sauce instead of layering it.)

  5. Sprinkle additional shredded cheddar cheese on top of the casserole.

  6. Next, sprinkle the Ritz cracker crumbs over top.

  7. Sprinkle with a few parsley flakes.

  8. Bake for 30 minutes.

Recipe Notes

NOTE: Mama’s original recipe calls for a few drops of hot pepper sauce. Since Lynn doesn’t like hot or spicy foods, I omitted it. But, if you like, add it in with the milk and grated cheese. Also, Mama didn't use the cracker crumbs or parsley. That was Candace's contribution to this recipe.
