Grandmama Hall’s Coca Cola Cake

Grandmama Hall's Coca Cola Cake . . . When I was a child, Grandmama Hall would make her Coca Cola Cake for us for our after-school treats. It was such a wonderful surprise to go to her house and find these moist, chocolatey squares wrapped in waxed paper. We, her grandchildren, thought this was the absolutely best treat she would make for us. And, even today, it is one of the best chocolate cakes you will ever eat! So, I decided to make it as a birthday cake for Candace on her birthday last week, March 13th. And, since Trey's birthday was on March 3rd, both of them came over to eat some of the cake! (I sent Jason's piece home with him Thursday, since he wasn't here with the other two.) About Grandmama Hall's Coca Cola Cake . . … [Read more...]

Mama’s Lemon Cake

Mama's Lemon Cake . . . a taste of sunshine in the winter! Mama's Lemon Cake is a recipe my mother made for decades. Where she got the recipe is not known to me, but what I do know is that she made it in the 1960's when I was growing up. (Oops! I'm telling my age!!!) My memories of this cake are that it was always delicious with just the right amount of "lemon" to give you a real taste of sunshine . . . even in the winter! Last weekend was our Chef Candace Christmas Party, so I decided to make Mama's Lemon Cake for dessert. It's pretty common knowledge to associate lemon desserts with spring and summer, but I think this cake is good any time and any season of the year. Plus, it is super easy to make!!! Making Mama's Lemon Cake . . … [Read more...]

Gob Cake! A Pennsylvania specialty!

Gob Cake, a special treat from my Pennsylvania friend! I work at Candace's shop a couple of days a week. I call it her "shop", but it is actually a small specialty restaurant. Kayla Shaulis, her manager, is from Pennsylvania. We've had many discussions of favorite recipes and foods from her "neck of the woods". So, for Christmas, she gave me a collection of Pennsylvania recipes and made this Gob Cake for our Chef Candace Christmas Party. Can I tell you how excited I was to taste this scrumptious cake and to get her collection of Pennsylvania recipes??? Now . . . I have added to my Bucket List a trip to Lancaster County where the Amish live, which is really close to her hometown. Gob Cake . . . a "Whoopie Pie" in a cake! Kayla describes … [Read more...]

Mississippi Mud Cake for dessert!

What's for dessert? I'm kind of like my Grandmama Hall. I like to have a "little something sweet" after a meal, which means that I have to have something sweet to eat! Well, that's where I found myself over the weekend. . . pondering . . . what to bake for dessert? My mind kept going back to Mississippi Mud Cake. Why? I don't know. I think I've only made it once or twice before, but the marshmallow layer kept bringing me back to this tempting dessert. I really thought that this was actually Mississippi Mud Brownies, but I could only find Mississippi Mud Cake in my cookbooks. I looked at several, and finally settled on Paula Deen's recipe. She is my favorite Southern cook! Everything I have made of hers has turned out to be delicious, so … [Read more...]
