Grandmama Hall’s Coca Cola Cake

Grandmama Hall's Coca Cola Cake . . . When I was a child, Grandmama Hall would make her Coca Cola Cake for us for our after-school treats. It was such a wonderful surprise to go to her house and find these moist, chocolatey squares wrapped in waxed paper. We, her grandchildren, thought this was the absolutely best treat she would make for us. And, even today, it is one of the best chocolate cakes you will ever eat! So, I decided to make it as a birthday cake for Candace on her birthday last week, March 13th. And, since Trey's birthday was on March 3rd, both of them came over to eat some of the cake! (I sent Jason's piece home with him Thursday, since he wasn't here with the other two.) About Grandmama Hall's Coca Cola Cake . . … [Read more...]

Chocolate Cake with 7-Minute Frosting, a birthday cake for Candace!

Candace's favorite cake! Each year I try to make a dessert for each of my children for their birthday, preferably one of their favorites. Trey and Jason's never changes, but this year Candace decided she wanted a Chocolate Cake with 7-Minute Frosting! I haven't made this cake in at least 20 years, but I decided to give it my best shot. The Chocolate Cake with 7-Minute Frosting that has been a family favorite for decades is my Aunt Jo Hall's recipe. She would make it every Thanksgiving and Christmas for our Family Dinners at Grandmama Hall's house. I can remember the heavenly white, soft and creamy frosting atop the delicious chocolate layer cake even today. But, if you have ever tried to make 7-Minute Frosting, you know it can be a … [Read more...]

Mama’s Lemon Cake

Mama's Lemon Cake . . . a taste of sunshine in the winter! Mama's Lemon Cake is a recipe my mother made for decades. Where she got the recipe is not known to me, but what I do know is that she made it in the 1960's when I was growing up. (Oops! I'm telling my age!!!) My memories of this cake are that it was always delicious with just the right amount of "lemon" to give you a real taste of sunshine . . . even in the winter! Last weekend was our Chef Candace Christmas Party, so I decided to make Mama's Lemon Cake for dessert. It's pretty common knowledge to associate lemon desserts with spring and summer, but I think this cake is good any time and any season of the year. Plus, it is super easy to make!!! Gob Cake! A Pennsylvania specialty!

Gob Cake, a special treat from my Pennsylvania friend! I work at Candace's shop a couple of days a week. I call it her "shop", but it is actually a small specialty restaurant. Kayla Shaulis, her manager, is from Pennsylvania. We've had many discussions of favorite recipes and foods from her "neck of the woods". So, for Christmas, she gave me a collection of Pennsylvania recipes and made this Gob Cake for our Chef Candace Christmas Party. Can I tell you how excited I was to taste this scrumptious cake and to get her collection of Pennsylvania recipes??? Now . . . I have added to my Bucket List a trip to Lancaster County where the Amish live, which is really close to her hometown. Gob Cake . . . a "Whoopie Pie" in a cake! Kayla describes … [Read more...]
