Family Favorite Thanksgiving Pies

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because it goes back to the beginning of our nations history and the principles on which we were founded–God, religious freedom, and America. And, I love the tradition of our Family Thanksgiving Dinner get-togethers. One of the highlights of those dinners has always been our Family Favorite Thanksgiving Pies.

Family Favorite Thanksgiving Pies!

I try to always have a dinner for my children and grandchildren one night before Thanksgiving, even though we go to my sister, Jeri’s, house on Thanksgiving Day. And, I ALWAYS make our Family Favorite Thanksgiving Pies! It seems everyone has their own “favorite”, so I have to make different pies for each of my children and Lynn.

In this post, I’m sharing some of our Family Favorite Thanksgiving Pies. These are, Cherry Cream Cheese Pie  for Jason and Candace, Grandmama Hall’s Egg Custard Pie for Trey, and Pumpkin Pie for Lynn. Sometimes Candace will want my homemade Coconut Pie with Italian Meringue, but at this Thanksgiving (2015), she wanted the Cherry Cream Cheese Pie.

Making all their favorite pies is a tradition for my family. We rarely have a cake, if ever . . . unless it is Aunt Kathleen’s Pumpkin Roll, at my sister’s house.

Our Family Favorite Thanksgiving Pies . . .

Cherry Cream Cheese Pie for Thanksgiving

 Cherry Cream Cheese Pie . . .

This Cherry Cream Cheese Pie has been my son, Jason’s, favorite since he was a child. In fact, I think it’s the only pie he will eat! I did discover something when I made this pie once . . . YOU HAVE TO USE THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF LEMON JUICE!!! One time, I only had about 1/2 the amount of lemon juice called for in the recipe and didn’t want to go to the store. So . . . long story short. . . I used what I had thinking it was only in the pie for flavor. WRONG!!! For the first time in about 40 years the cream cheese filling didn’t set up. We ate it anyway, but, don’t make my mistake. Use the correct amount of lemon juice so your pie will be perfect:) When you make it by the recipe, it sets up beautifully, and is a delicious pie for any holiday.

Grandmama Hall's Egg Custard Pie for Thanksgiving

Grandmama Hall’s Egg Custard Pie . . .

Trey’s favorite pie is Grandmama Hall’s Egg Custard Pie. I have made this pie for years because it is not only Trey’s favorite, but the favorite of others in our family. Benson, his youngest son, LOVES it.

Here are some hints about Grandmama Hall’s Egg Custard Pie:

  • Grandmama Hall indicated in her handwriting that she used 2 tablespoons of flour more than the recipe called for. I think that makes the crust work better. It is a crust that you press into the pan, you don’t roll it out.
  • Also, be sure to cut your butter in chunks so that the butter will melt faster while your crust is in the oven.
  • You don’t want to over cook it either. It continues to cook when you take it out of the oven.

Grandmama Hall made this pie six or seven times before she “mastered” it. Then it became one of her “signature” pies. And, it has continued to be a family favorite since she was making them many years ago.

Mama's Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving

Pumpkin Pie . . .

We call this Mama’s Pumpkin Pie, but the reality is, it is the Libby’s Pumpkin Pie recipe on the back of the can of pumpkin puree. When I asked Mama for her Pumpkin Pie recipe, she said, “You can’t beat the recipe on the back of the Libby’s pumpkin can.” I agree. The Nestle’s Baking Company gave me permission to print the recipe on my blog.

This Pumpkin pie is an excellent pie, especially when served with “real” whipped cream. And, who can have Thanksgiving without Pumpkin Pie???

I hope our Family Favorite Thanksgiving Pies inspires you to make a pie for your Thanksgiving Dinner. Let me know what your family’s favorite Thanksgiving pies or desserts are.
